Why No Bike/Ped Bridge Over Lomas at UNM/UNMH?

Have you ever wondered why there’s a bike/ped bridge over busy Lomas Blvd. at UNM/UNMH to get to a parking garage and no such bridge for walkers/rollers/transit users to cross what might be the single busiest walker/roller/transit intersection in town?

Yeah, me neither. We have never wondered why because we know why.

Stay safe out there, everybody, especially as you try to walk/roll/get to the bus across Lomas Blvd. at Yale.

  1. Also, why does Lomas just west of the interstate have 6 lanes. It narrows by the courthouse without any issue. In my opinion, it would be a much more civilized road if it had like 4 lanes (or less).

I’ve always wondered how the people in charge of our healthcare system allow their employees to drive to work (and while we’re at it, offload the cost of parking to patients), when driving is the most health-destroying, soul-sucking, lifeless way to get from point A to point B. Do I really want a doctor treating me who doesn’t live a healthy lifestyle themselves? Idiotic. They should be setting the example.

  4. Even worse is the fact that the major bus hub (which is great, lots of connectivity!) is at Stanford just west of the ped bridge-to-car-storage-building. But the university has closed access to the north through the hospital. It’s a Maginot Line of access-controlled buildings, security-patrolled buildings. So me, who works on north campus, can’t get from the bus stop to my office. Nor can people trying to ride the bus to visit loved ones in the hospital, I think?

The project website points out: “Part of this four year project is also a bigger parking garage, so patients and visitors have an easier and more accessible experience arriving and leaving our hospital.” Because only people in cars constitute “patients and visitors.” Also, I see there’s to be a pedestrian bridge between Tower and parking garage. Because only people in cars constitute “humanity,” I suppose.
