ABQ Journal Demands Traffic Death Toll Action

Hard-hitting lead editorial in today’s Albuquerque Journal, if by “today” one means November 6th, 1935.

For emphasis and those who might have trouble reading the above on a phone, etc.

“It is understood that the new investigation is to approach the traffic problem and its death told from a mechanical rather than a moral viewpoint. This appears to be a logical procedure since we seem to have about reached the limit in cajolery, threats, or even in appeals to reason as effective cures for increasing fatality rates.”

Interesting that the 1935 Journal hits the proverbial nail on the 2024 head far better than anything found in the 2024 Journal regarding traffic safety (or much else, really). We still argue, hem, haw today about whether traffic engineering is the biggest problem, but folks had already figured that out 89 years ago.

Stay safe out there, everybody.
