Happiness is Often What Doesn’t Happen

After having pondered weak government roadway “improvements” the last two days here, I don’t want to finish the week on such a downer note. So let’s turn that roadway engineering frown upsidedown by showing you a probably bad idea government ended up not screwing up doing.

Albuquerque Journal, July 11, 1989

Yes, it’s a proposed loop (what they call a “Ring Road” in some parts) finished up via highway bridge over the Rio Grande connecting Gibson Blvd. and Arenal Rd. Something like this:

I know many of you don’t make it down my South Valley way much, but in addition to the Bosque/River impact, such a project would have split the lovely, bucolic neighborhood on the west side of the River and left who knows how many other negative outcomes.

In these days of scary political uncertainty, not to mention bad ideas for roadway changes, it’s somehow reassuring to know: 1. It’s always been screwed up; 2. Sometimes the screwed up ideas don’t come to fruition.

On that happy note, have a great weekend, everybody!
