Right at twice a year Albuquerque gets either too cold or too hot to ride a bicycle outside (and/or too smoky). I’m not complaining; only twice a year is damn close to exceptional.
Today is one of those twice a year days, so I’ve spent the requisite 57 minutes coaxing my old Surly’s back side onto the Wahoo trainer and the eleven minutes it takes for Zwift to load on my old Dell. I’m all ready to go nowhere.

Your mileage to nowhere might vary, but in my experience there’s truly a short time of excitement and anticipation when it comes to those two times a year I ride indoors. Right this second, I’m thinking I should stop typing and just go “visit” one of the cartoon roads seen above. This period ot excitement/anticipation has always been very short-lived, except back in 2020 and early during the Pandemic when your humble blogger traded any semblance of a social life for a few thousand miles to and through nowhere.
Looking at the weather forecast, it looks to be just one day of ABQ June Hellscape today before we get a rare stretch of what I’ll erroneously call June Monsoon. I also have a thing about not riding outdoors in lightning, so I guess there’s actually three times a year I don’t ride outside, but that condition is more easily worked around.
So today might be about it for the Summer Indoor Season (protip: Zwift is free for the first 25 km and that free 25 resets at the first of every month; today is June 1st). We’ll see how many minutes elapse between excitement/anticipation and “my god this is so goddamn boring!”
Stay cool, comfortable, and as smoke-free as possible, Burqueños.
