Roadways and the Two Types of Presidential Protest

For reasons that are all too painfully needed, everywhere you look these days there seems to be another protest of the worst president ever. I support them all and have attended a few so far, looking forward to both the next one and the time, seemingly way, way down the road these days, where we don’t need to have these protests anymore.

One roadway observation keeps recurring to me so far regarding these events, and as this is a “roadway…” blog, or “e-zine” to which it has recently been referred (I really like “e-zine”!), here’s that observation.

To this point, we’ve had two types of protests here in Burque. The first has protesters stand on the street corner with signs facing drivers in the hope drivers will: A. See the signs and honk; B. Not run the protesters over. The second has protesters taking over the street and marching sans drivers.

Type One Protest, 4th and Lomas in late January, 2026
Type Two Protest, “No Kings” in October 2025

I probably don’t need to tell BB readership my preference of protest types, but I will anyway. Type One protests place drivers/cars as the important audience to which protesters center attention. Type Two protests close the fucking road down. Perhaps needless to say, I’m a big Type Two fan and always feel a bit queasy with the Type One approach. I don’t care if this driver honks their fucking horn; they’re fucking drivers. Fuck them.

Admittedly, this us/them attitude is not particularly helpful in overthrowing the worst president ever. Yes, drivers are numerous and hugely important, do things like vote and otherwise participate in democracy, and centering them in our protesting thoughts is very likely good strategy. But give me a Type Two protest anytime. Every day. How about we close down Central Ave. or San Mateo Blvd. later this afternoon for a few hours? Who’s with me?

Yeah, my skills as protest organizer are very poor. Best leave that organizing to others, so I’ll just leave my two cents into merely suggesting we have as many “close the streets” protests as possible. Daily, if possible.

As “The Simpsons” joke goes, “I am not a crackpot.” See you on the streets/streetcorner.

One thought on “Roadways and the Two Types of Presidential Protest

  1. The Jan 25 protests at Lomas and 4th eventually (more than an hour after it started) did go to the streets and had streets closed. It wasn’t as big as the No Kings tho. And I do feel uneasy with cars being the audience and with honking. Honking just triggers me, even if they are trying to show support.
