How Best to Ding Dangerous Vehicle Types?

Bad news, everybody. My current, and hopefully last ever, attempt at gainful employment ends this week. That means your inbox, or where/however you receive Better Burque, is about to receive pretty much daily missives from this blog.

As personal employment still continues to linger like a bad case of Covid this week, I’m just posting this call-to-action from our friends at “America Walks” this morning. It sets up an interesting, and important choice.

“DANGEROUS CARS SHOULDN’T RECEIVE TOP SAFETY RATINGS!

For the first time ever, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed to rate cars based on safety for pedestrians through its New Car Assessment Program, its five-star safety rating program advertised to consumers. Under the current proposal, a vehicle could receive a failing grade for pedestrian crashworthiness, but still earn a five-star safety rating. This is unacceptable and misrepresents a vehicle as safe when it is not.

Now is the opportunity for NHTSA to take meaningful action and incorporate pedestrian safety ratings into its star safety ratings. You can tell NHTSA it needs to protect pedestrians by submitting your public comment with just one click through America Walks’ action alert page.”

The organization also points out that, right now, the debate is over two proposals: 1. Rate cars based on how they safe are for pedestrians; 2. Require technology that detects pedestrians and applies brakes before hitting walkers.

If it becomes either #1 or #2, that could get interesting and/or serve opponents the opportunity to kill the chance for either.

What do you think? Yes, that means you do most all of the writing until this bout of gainful employment ends.
