Crosswalk existentialism astride Juan Tabo Blvd.

Want to see what “infinite time” looks like?

Stare above for a while, folks. The time it takes to walk/roll across this striped crosswalk at Lexington/Claremont NE astride Juan Tabo Blvd. is infinite. At least it felt so yesterday.

Why the HELL is this crosswalk striping, with no HAWK, flashing beacon, or any accompanying signalization in place? We wonder why drivers don’t sufficiently comply with crosswalks, e.g., the attempt at Hollywood NW astride Rio Grande Blvd. Above is a very good reason why.

Getting back to physics, being, and time: You want to know the distance of “infinite time?” By my measure, it’s about 92 feet:

But let me tell ya, it’s seems much, much, much longer. Really long.

Lose the crosswalk striping here, City of Albuquerque. I’m not willing to be killed trying to use it just so my family can win a few hundred thousand bucks from Risk Management.

  1. They don’t care if you die as long as the average car travel time in that corridor is 1 second faster.

It’s basically malpractice, to quote https://www.asce.org/career-growth/ethics/code-of-ethics

  2. Thanks for flagging the Hollywood crossing here as an example. It helped me realize that the decision there is a remarkable precedent. If the city’s traffic engineers acknowledge that driver compliance means a mid-block crosswalk across can’t work EVEN WITH FLASHY WARNING LIGHTS can we just abandon the notion that mid-block crosswalks are of any use? The traffic counts at the Hollywood crossing are 30k.

  4. Weirdness here. It keeps posting something different than what I’ve typed. Trying a third time, because the traffic counts in the previous two are wrong.

  5. Got it! It’s treating my “greater than” and “less than” signs as a tag! Weird WordPress comment bug problem solved.

For the fourth time…. The traffic counts at the Hollywood crossing are LESS THAN 10k. The traffic counts at your Juan Tabo existential crisis crossing are GREATER THAN 30k.
