Okay, it’s been ten days or so now.
Back on January 22, 2017, a protest demonstration was held at Civic Plaza to protest the brand-new Trump Administration.

There was much to protest at the time, and the first Trump Administration unfortunately proved to be worth every sign, protest participant, and pink knit cap. It was a bad time.

But as bad as things were then, the second Trump Administration has in about ten days already proven to be far worse, seeming to have somewhat figured out how fascism and hatred can quickly destroy a democracy, country, world.
The need for hundreds, thousands, millions getting together here, there, and everywhere to protest has never been greater. Posts on obscure blogs like this won’t get anything done. Lots of good folks moving from Twitter to Bluesky won’t get it done.
I’ve written a bit over the past few weeks about local protests “back in the day” that helped prevent a paper mill from being built on the Rio Grande, our Bosque bike path from being a “scenic drive,” and rooted out systemic racial discrimination in UNM athletics. We need similar and even greater actions now at this very perilous time. Pretty much everything we cherish and believe is under great threat.
I’ll be on the lookout for any chance to participate in any such action. I’ll pass along anything I hear about such demonstrations, marches, etc.
That pink hat has been on the wall of my little, poorly wall-papered office ever since January 2017. Time for it to come of the wall and get back on my head.

Hope to see you soon and often.

At this point it is hard to know what to protest. There seems to be horrific intentions, but it is being carried out with near total incompetence. Consequently, there’s a flood of outrage with few facts or actual consequences to support a coherent protest. Add to that, the ridiculous cabinet he is assembling having no experience organizing anything, let alone a real professional type of plan required to execute the insane vision. Protest the chaos? Protest the obvious wastefulness of staged deportations? Protest the clowns? I almost think they are trying to goad people to protest so they can have more photo ops, and police in riot gear to give them an excuse to launch martial law or something. I am starting to think that an actual resistance is to not react, or cooperate and keep embracing diversity, keep teaching, keep on speaking truth, being kind and generally be defiant and confident in knowing we are on the right side of history. Protests may have a place, but we should not give them what they want.

Anon: Perhaps it would be a good idea to turn the “bug” that is the firehose of myriad fascist efforts into a “feature” through inclusive actions under a “Protest Trump Administration” umbrella. I’m reminded of an contemporary observer to Abraham Lincoln’s drive for a very inclusive Republican Party in 1860/beyond. Something to the effect of “He (Lincoln) wants to include everyone, from the long-haired men to the short-haired women.”

Anon: In the two minutes between reading your comment and writing this, I got an email from a genderqueer trans world friend, where bad things are already happening. And another from a person working inside the system in federal environmental policy where bad things are already happening.
Bad things are already happening. I am not as sanguine as you about their competence or lack thereof.
