Today’s Homework: Sticky Wicket

If learning anything is like learning a new language, learning the sport of cricket is, for Americans at least, like learning Korean or Arabic. I.e., hard.

Below is a screenshot excerpt from today’s “OBO” (Over-by-Over) Guardian report on the third ODI (One-Day International) between England and West Indies held at The Oval in South London. I’ve red-boxed 11 words/phrases and your task is to fully explain each. I could tell you not to Google any answers, but what good would that do? In fact, I’m so nice, you get a freebie, as they’re worth ten points each.

As for this American, I started following cricket around the time I read P.G. Wodehouse’s Mike and Psmith stories earlier this century. And like any language, I’m still learning. Even today I first learned one of the red-boxed terms above: “red-inker.” No, I’m not telling.

Enjoy! Show your work.
