The mysterious and murky “Word on the Street” just informed me that 2nd Street is closed between Southern Ave. S.W. and Woodward Rd. S.W. for “several weeks” because of a sewer line break. Of course this also means we have a brand new walking/rolling path for “several weeks.” Yay!

The closure allows for “local use only,” which fortunately is pretty limited in terms of who/what is situated on this stretch of 2nd St. There will also be the occasional driver ignoring the “local” thing, so they’re to be considered, especially as those scofflaws always seem to be in that mood that says “Hell, I’m breaking one law, I might as well break ’em all!”
You might be thinking “Who cares? There’s a bike path on the Bosque parallel and adjacent to 2nd Street in this stretch!” And you’d be right to ask, but: 1. The Bosque Path angles west and 2nd Street tends east, so it saves a bit of time/distance; 2. More importantly, it’s a new (kinda) bike path! New stuff! And, in this case, stuff that usually has drivers going WAY over the posted 35 mph.
Disclaimers about it being a really bad idea and officially highly discouraged aside, BB is just mentioning it here in case you didn’t know and might be interested.
Stay safe and vertical out there, everybody.
